DSL Comparison

|
DSL vs. analog and ISDN internet connections
DSL is basically a faster and improved version of ISDN (Integrated
Services Digital Network), which is an improved, higher
speed version of older, analog dial-up modem connections.
ISDN stands for Integrated Services Digital Network or
the ability to combine voice and data on the same line.
Due to it’s high cost, ISDN was prevented from becoming
widely popular. Because of the additional line installations
and slight relative increase in speed over a 56kbps modem,
ISDN did not establish itself. ISDN offers dedicated, always
on access and is relatively secure, but the additional
costs and slow speed make it hardly worth the per-minute
billing and high installation costs.

DSL vs. cable modem
problems with cable modem access
low availability
Fiber-optic cable must be available near any business wishing
to use cable internet service. Currently, a very small percentage
of newer buildings or developments are wired for this service.
This means that cable companies must run new, expensive fiber
to each location. This limits the current number of businesses
with access to cable internet service (less than 2% of the
current cable TV market).
resource sharing
Cable users are configured like a Local Area Network to
share a single fiber connection among the thousands of
subscribers. As more and more businesses connect and access
high-speed information on the internet, the bandwidth available
to each one diminishes accordingly.
low security
As with any Local Area Network, cable does not provide
much security for online commerce or confidential information.
Other businesses on the cable network may be able to intercept
your credit card informtation or other sensitive, confidential
company data at will.
Each of these issues is a non-factor with DSL connections.
